Note that the rates provided are for the first tax payment when the vehicle is registered, and they are dependent on the vehicle’s CO2 emissions.

Over 255 | 2,605 | 2,605 | 2,595 |
This table shows that the tax paid upon first registering the vehicle varies depending on the vehicle’s fuel type and CO2 emissions. For example, diesel cars that meet the Real Driving Emissions 2 (RDE2) standard and petrol cars with CO2 emissions between 101 to 110 g/km will pay £185. In contrast, other diesel cars that do not meet the RDE2 standard will pay £210 for the same CO2 emissions range. Alternative fuel cars, which include hybrids, bioethanol, and liquid petroleum gas vehicles, will pay £175 for the same CO2 emissions range.
This initial tax payment covers the vehicle for 12 months. After this, vehicle owners will need to pay a different tax rate every 6 or 12 months.
For the second tax payment and onwards, the rates differ based on the fuel type of the vehicle. Here are the rates:
Fuel type | Single 12 month payment | Single 12 month payment by Direct Debit | Total of 12 monthly payments by Direct Debit | Single 6 month payment | Single 6 month payment by Direct Debit |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Petrol or diesel | £180 | £180 | £189 | £99 | £94.50 |
Electric | £0 | N/A | N/A | £0 | N/A |
Alternative | £170 | £170 | £178.50 | £93.50 | £89.25 |
For vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000, an additional £390 per year is required. This does not apply to zero-emission vehicles and is only paid for 5 years from the second time the vehicle is taxed. Here are the rates:
Fuel type | Single 12 month payment | Single 12 month payment by Direct Debit | Total of 12 monthly payments by Direct Debit | Single 6 month payment | Single 6 month payment by Direct Debit |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Petrol or diesel | £570 | £570 | £598.50 | £313.50 | £299.25 |
Alternative | £560 | £560 | £588 | £308 | £294 |
It’s recommended to check the list price with your dealer to understand how much vehicle tax you’ll have to pay.
You can pay for your vehicle tax online, at the Post Office and by phone. You can tax your car, motorcycle or other vehicle using a reference number from a recent reminder (V11) or ‘last chance’ warning letter from DVLA, your vehicle log book (V5C) or the green ‘new keeper’ slip from a log book if you’ve just bought it1. You can pay by debit or credit card, or Direct Debit. You must tax your vehicle even if you do not have to pay anything, for example if you’re exempt because you’re disabled.
You can check if a vehicle has up-to-date vehicle tax or has been registered as off the road (SORN) using the vehicle enquiry service on this page. You’ll need the vehicle’s registration number (number plate). It can take up to 5 working days for the records to update.
Staying updated with the current Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), also known as car tax, is essential for every UK motorist. As of 1 April 2023, the UK government has revised the VED rates. The Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced in his Spring Budget that VED rates for cars, vans, and motorcycles would increase in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI). However, VED for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) will remain frozen for 2023-24 to support the haulage sector.
The standard road tax has increased by the RPI, 10.1%, rounded to the nearest £1 or £5. Therefore, the standard rate for road tax has risen from £165 to £180.
The VED rates for the first year also saw adjustments in 2023. Vehicles emitting 0g/km of CO2 continue to pay £0 for the first-year rate. For those emitting 1-50g/km, the first-year road tax remains at £10, while the standard VED rate increases from £165 to £180. The rates progressively increase with higher CO2 emissions, culminating with vehicles emitting over 255g/km, which see the first-year rate increase from £2,365 to £2,605.
For cars first registered between 1 March 2001, and 31 March 2017, the VED rates vary based on the emission band they fall into, ranging from £0 (Band A) to £695 (Band M).
Luxury cars, costing more than £40,000 when new, have seen a rise in surcharge from £335 to £390 from 1 April 2023. This surcharge is payable each year on top of the standard flat rate of VED for five years from the second year of registration. After the car reaches six years old, it returns to the standard flat rate. Notably, zero-emission cars are exempt from this charge.
Understanding these UK vehicle tax rate updates is essential for ensuring you stay compliant with the law while budgeting appropriately for your vehicle-related costs. Always check your vehicle tax status regularly to avoid inconveniences or penalties.
