How the MOT test works

During the MOT, important parts on your vehicle will be checked to make sure they meet the legal standards. You can watch the test from a viewing area but you are not allowed to interrupt the tester.

Vehicle MOT Test Classes

Vehicle Class 1: YES

Motor bicycles / Motorcycles, Mopeds, Scooters (with or without sidecars) up to 200cc (200 cm3)

Vehicle Class 2: YES

All motor bicycles / Motorcycles (including Class 1 mopeds, scooters) (with or without sidecars) over 200 cm3 (200cc)

Vehicle Class 3: YES

Three-wheeled vehicles not exceeding 450kg ULW (excluding motorcycle combinations) category L2 or L5

Vehicle Class 4: YES

Three-wheeled vehicles more than 450kg ULW category L5

Quadricycles category L6 or L7

Cars and Taxis category M1

Minibuses, motor caravans, dual purpose vehicles and ambulances up to 12 passenger seats category M1 or M2 American pickups up to 6500kg DGW. Goods vehicles not exceeding 3,000kg DGW category N1

Vehicle Class 5: YES

Private passenger vehicles, ambulances, motor caravans and dual purpose vehicles in all cases with thirteen or more passenger seats (including community and play buses, etc.) that: are fitted with no more seat belts than the minimum required because of their construction;

Or are identified as having been fitted with a type approved seat belt installation to all seats when built; or have been tested as class 5A or class 6A (PSV) with at least the same number of seat belts as are currently fitted.
