How the MOT test works

During the MOT, important parts on your vehicle will be checked to make sure they meet the legal standards. You can watch the test from a viewing area but you are not allowed to interrupt the tester.

Vehicle Class 2: no
Vehicle Class 3: no
Vehicle Class 4: YESClass 4 MOT

Three-wheeled vehicles more than 450kg ULW category L5

Quadricycles category L6 or L7

Cars and Taxis category M1

Minibuses, motor caravans, dual purpose vehicles and ambulances up to 12 passenger seats category M1 or M2 American pickups up to 6500kg DGW. Goods vehicles not exceeding 3,000kg DGW category N1

Vehicle Class 5: YESClass 5 MOT

Private passenger vehicles, ambulances, motor caravans and dual purpose vehicles in all cases with thirteen or more passenger seats (including community and play buses, etc.) that: are fitted with no more seat belts than the minimum required because of their construction;

Or are identified as having been fitted with a type approved seat belt installation to all seats when built; or have been tested as class 5A or class 6A (PSV) with at least the same number of seat belts as are currently fitted.

About the MOT Test

The MOT tests some important items on your vehicle to check that they meet the legal standards. It is not the same as having your vehicle serviced and does not check its general mechanical condition.

The MOT test does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.
